This is Michael Smith and his parents, Mr. and Mr. Chuck Smith, who attended the Head Start program in Rochester in Fulton County, Area Five Head start.  Chuck was the Chair of the Head Start Policy council for 2 years and has always said that it was Head Start that helped Michael get a strong beginning for his education.  He just graduated Valedictorian at Caston High School.

 

Woohoo, Michael!  We’re proud of you!!!!!!!

This is a picture of one of Area Five’s great-grandparents, Dickie Harrell,  who, together with his wife (great-grandmother), are raising their great-grandchildren.  He just finished serving a 3-year term on Policy Council and is now on the Board of Directors.  He stopped by to show his great-granddaughter’s award from school, O.J. Neighbors Elementary in Wabash.  He credits her educational success to having been a part of Head Start.

We are pleased to announce that Head Start/Early Head Start programs will be recouping all the funding that was lost last year due to sequestration.  Head Start is the only non-defense program that received this type of increase.  Programs will also receive a 1.3% Cost of Living increase.   There will also be $500 million available for Early Head Start/Child Care partnerships.  Lastly, $25 million will fund the DRS for this year.

This fall more than 57, 000 low income children will be denied a place in the Head Start program because of federal budget cuts. The Huffington Post’s Amanda Terkel and Ellen Cervantes of The Child Care Resource Center in Los Angeles join NewsNation to discuss the impact the cuts could have on the children.

INDIANA HAS LOST 718 SLOTS. 


That is 718 children and families in our state that will not receive HS or EHS services this year.  This is sad news for all of us.
